Jewel E. Ann has done it again. I loved her previous book One and with every book of hers, I have high expectations when she releases something new. Scarlet Stone is another strong and powerful story from Jewel E. Ann. I simply loved the main character Scarlet. It's not every book that I feel a love and connection towards the main female character but here I fell in love with Scarlet. Wholeheartedly! She was a fierce, honest and funny as hell British woman with some outstanding skills as a thief and anecdotes. She loved her father Oscar who adored his daughter and he would do literally anything for her. Their relationship was heartwarming and at times hilarious.

The story has a great mixture of humor, sentimentality and sensuality. The themes really struck a chord with me because of the human aspect of the story. I really didn't know what to expect and where it took Scarlet but once I reached two chapters I was a goner. The story was different, so was Scarlet and her current circumstances took me by surprise. It only made the story more alluring and intriguing. The same can be said about a certain man named Theodore Reed. He was a mystery at first. His moody and angry personality created some very funny scenes with Scarlet who wasn't afraid of him at all to begin with. On the contrary, she was having the time of her life. For the first time in a long time. Theodore and Scarlet were insanely hot and so good together. They challenged each other. Made them prioritize and reevaluate life. But there was a reason Theodore came of as angry and closed off. He definitely had his secrets and of course being a thief only got Scarlet into trouble. Not only with him but with the other intriguing characters.

Every character was layered, well developed and important to the story. Scarlet's journey was about a soul searching for its mate, for love and yet so much more. I was mesmerized and filled with so many emotions ranging from sad to ecstatically happy. Her search wasn't only for love but also for change and growth. Let me tell you all, Scarlet definitely succeeded with both.
Jewel E. Ann's prose has never been better. Flawless. My expectations have been met and Scarlet Stone is not to be missed. Fantastic and unique.

Scarlet Stone edition by Jewel E Ann Maxann Dobson Romance eBooks Reviews

“My name is Scarlet Stone and my biggest fear is that someday I will find what I want most in life and it will be impossible to steal.”

I had no idea what to expect while diving into Scarlet Stone. This was my first book by Jewel E. Ann, but I’ve had my eye on her Jack & Jill Series for awhile; this synopsis just happened to draw me in quicker.

This bit had something to do with it

He resents every breath she takes.
She’s fascinated by his every move.

Now does that not sound awesome? Throw in a bit about him looking like Thor…

Hook,
line,
and
sinker.

I don’t think this is the book I should have started on by this author. It was narrated a little differently with Scarlet introducing herself to the reader each chapter with different facts about her life. To me, I wish I could have been shown that’s who she was instead of told. Her past and character were still a mystery to me even at the end.

“My name is Scarlet Stone. I am the smallest kid in the playground. I kick bullies in the balls because they never see me coming. My self-defense skills—zero. My hundred-meter sprint time—thirteen seconds.”

Scarlet is an eccentric heroine. She was a thief, a con-artist, and supposedly a happily engaged woman. But we don’t get to see that side of her at all. The story begins with her changing course and moving to America for an unknown reason. And leaving behind her incarcerated father.

The first interaction between Scarlet and Theo was laugh out loud over-the-top. His first words to her “Stay out of my stuff and don’t make a mess.”

And to where she promptly takes a bite out of one of his apples. Theo isn’t an all talk guy—no, he shoved her against the wall and dug the bite of apple out of her mouth with his finger. It was feeling a little ARR up in here for some reason. The OTT first meeting with the hero, maybe?

But I wouldn’t call Theo a “hero.” He’s rough and inconsiderate, but he looks like Thor…so… yeah, I’m going to Hell.

Anyway, their interactions are intensely fueled by Theo disliking anything to do with Scarlett, and Scarlett staring at Theo while he works, until, bam—you guessed it. It comes together with an explosion of angry sex.

Other reviews are divulging the secret, but to me, it was a shock. A good angsty shock, and I don’t want to give it away. I think it’s one of those plot points a reader shouldn’t know before diving in.

This wasn’t a simple romance. And looking back at it, I really wish it were. There was too much going on for me. A combination of a whole load of stuff—a tragic love, some paranormal aspects with a side character, and a Jason Bourne type scenario after fifty perfect. Maybe not so much Jason Bourne at all, but a suspenseful side.

This was an angsty story. And the conflict between Theo and Scarlet was kept through the majority of the book, which I’m a sucker for. Theo constantly pushed Scarlet away, and that I grew a little tired of because she was stuck to him like glue.

The disregard of human life in this book? Jeez. I didn’t connect with Scarlett very well. And I guess that’s why when she makes some shocking decisions regarding her life, I didn’t understand—it was like coming out of left field and hitting me in the head.

I DON’T CARE HOW TRAGIC YOUR LOVE STORY IS—DYING IS NOT AN ANSWER.

It was a little melodramatic for me. And I didn’t feel the love that much; I think that’s why to me, it was too much. Maybe if I were invested more, than her reactions would’ve seemed reasonable to me. But…probably not.

“Love is maddening. It robs all reason and leaves us drowning in desperation and fear.”

In a lot of ways, I enjoyed this story; especially it’s philosophical side. I loved the love/hate relationship, and the touching moments that break through from Theo’s thick exterior. To me, he felt like a strongly developed, realistic character. A little damaged and tough. And I connected with him a lot his struggle, pain, and hatred of falling in love.

It was an interesting story, and the philosophical messages weren’t short of inspiring. If you’re looking for a deeper story with some mystery and suspense, and a volatile relationship, then I’d recommend Scarlet Stone.

“The most poignant observation I’ve made over the past six months, that I failed to see over the previous thirty-one years, is that there is nothing more phenomenal than one human’s addiction to another— and there is nothing more devastating than one human’s addiction to another. As Theo leaves his final mark on me, all I feel is this phenomenal devastation.”
