The Grass Is Always Greener over the Septic Tank Erma Bombeck 9780345471727 Books

Erma Bombeck was a true star in her writing. This is the first of her books that I read, laughing hysterically at almost every word. This book has only gotten better with age. For people who didn't grow up in this age, it may seem quaint, and mostly unreal, but believe me when I say this is how life really was, once upon a time. Ms. Bombeck was writing hysterically funny columns long before Dave Barry, Carl Hiaasen, and Louis Lowdermilk. Books such as this once graced most bookshelves, and unknowing children got rid of them. If/when Amazon puts the rest of her work out there, and perhaps Shirley Jackson's "Raising Demons" - she did write more than "The Lottery" - people will understand that comedic writing can be done without swearing, sex, and references to drugs. Love this book. More like this, please. I will admit her death literally hit me in the gut, and I cried real tears. Writers such as Ms. Bombeck just aren't there any more.

The Grass Is Always Greener over the Septic Tank Erma Bombeck 9780345471727 Books Reviews

I enjoyed the tongue-in-cheek descriptions of the development of the phenomenon known as "suburbia". Very sassy entertaining read! And the self-deprecating humor made me appreciate the author even more.
I remember reading this years ago and thought I'd give it another try. It has funny parts, but after a while you could almost hear the drum in the background (ba-dum-dum) when so many one-or-two liners would come across. But all in all an enjoyable read. 3.5 stars.
I picked this up to obtain a quote. It isn't necessarily one of Mrs. Bombeck's best, but even on an off day she nails a lot of suburbia's foolishness. A great book to read when you have totally HAD it with PTA, work, and dealing with city regulations.

Erma Bombeck's humor is timeless because it deals with human foibles.
Erma Bombeck's humor shaped my own sense of humor when I discovered her in my teens. This is a striking indictment of the type of housing development my parents moved to in my childhood but with love, respect and Bombeck's unique humor.
My mom used to read Erma Bombeck book when I was a kid. I remember her laughing until she was almost in tears when she was reading her books. I found one of them on a shelf at there house and took it with me on a trip to an amusement park a couple of years ago. I would read it while I waited for my kids to ride the roller coasters. It was perfect. Then I would read bits of it to my daughter while we were standing in line waiting to get on the rides and she really liked it too. Last summer we went on another trip to a different amusement park and I purchased this book and one other to take with me. It was a lot of fun and again my daughter loved it too. She is a teenager.
Hard to believe now, but suburbia was once new in America. It came with all kinds of challenges, absence of building codes and all the competition among young families in their attempts to "keep up with the Jones". A great read to remind many of us what we take for granted wasn't always so. Erma always throws in her own unique humorous spin too. A little dated, but for those who enjoy Erma it's a classic read.
My wife bought this as a gift. I don't know why. But, her friend loved it and we got a bottle of wine out of it, so....win win? To all men recommend your wife buy this for her friends. You will get free booze. Or something like that.
