The premise of Black Moon is brilliant. I was really excited to read this book as it sounded like a fresh apocalyptic novel. People gone crazy due to lack of sleep is a pretty good idea when it comes to a doomed society-something different. The first part of this book did have me excited and talking about the novel. I think the way the author described the ravishing of the world as the cause of unleashing something crazy in the atmosphere that caused a sort of insomniac virus that was turning people against one another. Some people are unaffected by this sickness and pretend to be unable to sleep because the mere act of seeing someone asleep turns them into insane savages.

The beginning of the voyage with our survivors describing their surroundings and thinking about the coming end of society was good. The following of our heroes however, became disjointed and somewhat boring to me. What started off with a bang somewhere mid-through fizzled for me and the book didn't have its earlier fire. I didn't find myself caring about what happened to those who were searching for their families and the story for me, fell apart.

I thought the first half or so was excellent but the deeper the novel went, the more focus it lost and this affected me as a reader.

I bought it based upon the concept. I was expecting something along the lines of a good Stephen King book but ended up with a book that I did finish but not something I would recommend. The story line wasn't all that interesting. Never read this writer before and probably won't purchase anything from him in the future. I gave it three stars because I didn't hate it, it really was just okay
It's hard to understand both why Calhoun wrote the book and what his point was. The writing isn't terrible, but it's disjointed and confusion. Perhaps he intended us readers to be as confused as the sleepless people in the story. In the end, it just peters out, leaving me with my questions, including Why did I bother finishing it?
This is the first book I ever read in one sitting. I simply had to know what was going to happen next. The best books are the ones that put a new twist on something common, and Calhoun's idea does it beautifully. In these days where everyone is doing a post-apocalyptic dystopian book, Calhoun found a way to do it uniquely, and breathe new life into an all too common theme. The sleep deprivation concept is brilliant and terrifying, made all the more so by its connection to something realistic and relevant to today. As a writer, I'm jealous. I wish I had thought of this. Well worth every cent. Support this author, and watch for more from him.
I liked (not loved) this book. It has a different dystopian premise. I found it challenging to read, both in thinking through the consequences of the situation in which insomnia becomes an unrelenting epidemic and in dealing the with pervasive darkness of the story and characters. The writing was often rewarding and sometimes surprising. It doesn't quite compare to The Road, but it brings it to mind. For a first novel, a promising debut.
Do not read this if you're looking for a tie it in a bow at the end happy ending. Do not read this if you cry easily when bad things happen to animals. This in an interesting take of what might happen should an epidemic of this sort were to happen. I wish they would have let us know what happens to Lila.
The book starts off very interesting with differing viewpoints from characters experiencing the insomnia-epidemic. But after a while it seems to move to a zombie-ish type experience for some characters and a strange erection obsession for another. In the middle, there is way too much backstory on one character's relationship with his wife. I started disliking their relationship after reading pages on it. In the end the book tries to tie the characters' stories together. But that seems very abrupt and without any resolution. If the book kept more of the suspense or questions from the beginning and maybe focused more on how to "cure" the epidemic, I think I would have enjoyed it more and given it more stars.
You know the feeling of anxiety you get when you're about seventy-five percent finished with a good novel? That feeling that's one part apprehension about finishing it, two parts excitement about diving back into the world of the novel every time you pick it up? Black Moon has that effect. The apocalyptic world of the novel is rendered so completely, so intensely, that it's immersive, and the characters all the more alive.

In the next few years, this novel will be a poster-book for the kind of genre-bending writing that Michael Chabon and Ursula Le Guin have been harping about for years. Is it a literary novel or a zombie novel? Which shelf does it go on? Personally, I could care less. Black Moon is a fantastic work of imagination.
This book isn't really a standalone book. It is, for want of a better description, both a beginning and a teaser. It is well written and you gladly follow the story, characters and it's premise of the apocalypse brought about through a world gone mad from mass insomnia (lack of healthy rem sleep - see Star Trek NG for a similar storyline). However when you reach the end it is not a true end nor is this book a lengthy lead in to the next book in a series. It's just that, an end. This book is filled with pages of interesting people, well written paragraphs, all leading - nowhere. It is a teaser, as if it was merely an exercise in writing well crafted characters, backgrounds and scenes. That's it, that's all. The end of the book is the end of the exercise and, though an enjoyable read it leads nowhere and leaves it's readers to nothing but the last page. I would be interested in seeing what this author can present in the future but I would be leary of another well written journey to nowhere.
