Moonraker is the third book in Ian Fleming's James Bond series. Many of the usual facets of a successful Bond tale are in place. We have an evil villian, Sir Hugo Drax. We have a beautiful British agent who falls for Bond's charms but resists him in the end. Plus, we have 007 and his normal supporting cast. In this story, Bond is charged with investigating Sir Hugo because M thinks the rich industrialist cheats at cards at M's private club. The British private club atmosphere is described beautifully, and Bond turns the tables on Drax in a bridge game to be remembered. From there Bond is assigned to be in charge of security at Drax's Moonraker project, Britain's new ICBM-based national defense system. As usually happens once Bond arrives on the scene, things are not what they appear to be on the surface. Moonraker actually is a devious plot derived by an ex-Nazi officer to have an atomic warhead landed on London. Bond manages to sort things out and save British civilization in the end, but only after much travail.

I think Ian Fleming finally got it right with number three in the James Bond series! I have no complaints about this novel as I have about the first two books in the series. After having read the first three novels in the Bond series in order, I believe modern readers maybe should read 'Moonraker' before 'Casino Royale' or 'Live and Let Die'. We all know Bond's back story, and 'Moonraker' can be read as a standalone. It isnt, like, Great Literature, but it is fun, and James is more like the actors in the movies.
I'm reading the Bond books in order, and I have to say, either Fleming's writing was improving, or he finally figured out that we needed some context.

Unlike Casino Royale (which had its own excitement for being the first Bond book I'd read), or Live and Let Die (which started slow), I loved this writing in this book from the very start. We see James Bond in the office and get an idea of what his day to day is like. His first two books put us right into the action and give us very little beyond his Hoagy Carmichael good-looks (personally, I don't think Hoagy Carmichael was that handsome, but shared a lot of the facial characteristics of Ian Fleming...hmmmm).

We also get a mystery novel that pays dividends. Unlike the other books, where you know who the bad guy is from the start, in Moonraker, you're sort of dragged along with Bond's continuing opinion changes of one Sir Hugo Drax. The backstory on Drax is also very detailed and helps make the ending that much more potent.

I was apparent to me, as I read the book, why this book was not followed for the movie. It deals with issues that are closer to World War II than the cold war (don't want to spoil it with specifics, for those that haven't read it yet). It makes sense that during the era of science fiction, they would play off of that. But while Moonraker is not one of my favorite Bond films (actually the campy jokes and silliness of Jaws and his girlfriend...oh and the US space shuttle that can be ready in 5 minutes to fly into space and save the planet, and the Close Encounters theme...make it almost painful to watch). Holly Goodhead though does make it bearable to watch. But her character is not in the book. Instead the lovely (so I am told) Gala Brand is an undercover agent of Scotland Yard...and a strong Bond girl.

I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to jump in the series...sure you can do like me and read the first 2, but I think this book is where Fleming finally hit his groove.
Unlike the Bond movie that shares its name (but little else) Moonraker (the book) is a first class story with a strong plot and perhaps the best character development of any Fleming title. The story is set in the 1950's and centers around an offer by millionaire Hugo Drax to develop for Great Britain a limited range missile capable of delivering a nuclear payload against the Soviet Union. As is typical in a Bond book much of the early action takes place at a card game. Bond's boss "M" is suspicious that Drax is cheating at Bridge and is doing so at an exclusive club where "M" is a member. The matter must be handled privately because Drax is a national hero but there is a larger concern can a man who has been given the power Drax has been given to develop such a weapon be trusted if he exhibits such a character flaw? Knowing Bond's card skill "M" privately invites him into a game to find the truth and quietly confront Drax if he turns out to be a cheater. The card table confrontation is one of the best in the Bond series but the action only intensifies when the investigation moves to Drax's missile site near Dover. The action that unfolds there provides in literary form the most gripping Bond movie never made. If you are a Bond fan (movies or books) you will enjoy this exciting adventure.
After reading "Live and Let Die", with the sexism and racism really over the top, I wasn't sure I would continue reading these novels. But, I do really enjoy Fleming as a writer, so figured I'd give it another shot. These are things that come with these novels, that one has to know going in. I was pleasantly surprised that "Moonraker" had very little sexism/racism, yay progress!

I've seen all the Bond movies, so I know what the synopsis is going into each book. I won't give spoilers, but this book was basically entirely new, very different from the movie, which was great!

It was interesting seeing Bond go about his daily life. Getting his butt kicked in the shooting range, doing paperwork, interactions with other staff in his office. This sounds boring, but it was a welcome change from the other books, to see a different side that you especially never see in the movies (that would be boring).

Overall, "Moonraker" was a very enjoyable book and of the first three, I found myself not being able to put the book down towards the end more so than the other books.
