Red Iron Nights (1991) is the sixth Fantasy novel in the Garrett File series, following Dread Brass Shadows. The initial volume in this sequence is Sweet Silver Blues.
In the previous volume, the snow had melted and Garrett was out running. Everybody in Tunfaire except the Dead Man was outdoors. Garrett was having problems with running through the crowd.
Saucerhead was sitting on the doorstep counting the laps while drinking Garrett's beer. He was signaling nine laps when Garrett came into view. Then he pointed toward something.
Tinnie was coming toward Garrett. She waved at him. Then a dark-skinned, weaselly guy stabbed her in the back.
Saucerhead jumped off the steps and took off running, with Garrett slightly behind. Garrett stopped by Tinnie and checked her pulse. Dean came out and offered to carry her inside to the Dead Man.
When Garrett caught up with Saucerhead, he was grabbed and held back. Saucerhead gestured to the surroundings. Garrett broke off and started running down a nearby alley.
In this novel, Garrett is a former Marine. After getting out of the Corps, he became a private detective. He owns a house on Macunado Street.
The Dead Man is Garrett's partner. He had been killed four hundred years previously, but is neither dead nor a man; he is a four hundred fifty pound Loghyr whose body might be dead, but whose mind is definitely still alive.
Dean is the Garrett's housekeeper and cook. He is a very good cook, but he is often cranky.
Saucerhead Tharpe is an enforcer type. He is powerful, but a little bit slow in his thinking.
Morley Dotes is a friend of Garrett. He is more than half Darkelf and owns the Joy House vegetarian restaurant in Tun Faire. He also kills people for money.
Belinda Contague is the daughter of Chodo Contague, the premier crime boss of Tunfaire. She has heard about Garrett.
Westman Block is a Captain of the Tunfaire Watch. He is expecting a New Order to come soon.
In this story, Garrett walked into the Joy House and everybody stops talking. Puddle calls out his name. Several breeds finish their drinks and depart the premises.
Saucerhead waves him over to his table. He is sitting with his current employer, who is smoking a very large pipe full of weed. Soon the whole room is filled with smoke.
Puddle fills a tankard with beer and brings it to Garrett. He receives a mark coin in return. Garrett takes a large drink of the beer.
Morley comes down the stair and asks if Garrett is working. Garrett says he isn't, but Morley doesn't believe him. Then Belinda comes into the restaurant.
She is wearing black. Garrett doesn't recognize her, but Morley tells him that she is Chodo's daughter. She looks terrified.
Then two thugs came through the door. They hold it open for a third man. Someone yells at him to close the door.
The third man approached Belinda and whispers in her ear. She spits in his face. He yanks her out of the chair and drags her out the door.
Morley moves toward the door and the two thugs block his way. He kicks one in the head. The other thug grabs Morley.
Saucerhead and Garrett bypass the thugs and go out the door. Saucerhead notices the man and girl moving away toward a large black coach. Saucerhead grabs the third man and Garrett goes after the girl.
Garrett grabs Belinda, but someone in the coach is pulling her inside. The old man in the coach has poisonous green eyes that glow. Garrett hits him with his head-knocker.
The old man opens his mouth and butterflies swarm out. Saucerhead pushes Garrett aside and reaches for the old man. He pulls him out of the coach and throws him against a wall.
The old man's eyes stop glowing. Saucerhead picks him up and throws him back in the coach. He piles the third man on top of the old man. Garrett whacks a horse and the coach move out. Belinda also disappears.
Dean is not happy that Garrett is not looking for work. The Dead Man finds him a job following a crazy man. Garrett works a deal with the crazy guy.
This tale brings a set of murdered women with their throats slit and their guts cut out. All the women were brunettes much like Belinda. Block panics after the fifth killing and hires Garrett to discover the killer.
Garrett finds the killer, but he rises from the dead. The next installment in this sequence is Deadly Quicksilver Lies.
Highly recommended for Cook fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of ancient curses, good looking women, and a frustrated detective. Read and enjoy!

The streets of Tun-Fair are a gruelling place. Only those who have survived their five years of service in the Cantard dwell in the cities of Karenta, and Tun-Fair is no exception. Of course, there are exemptions, but mainly in the areas of women, children, elders, and non-humans. Yes, alien folk. Exotic I know. In the exciting world of the Garrett P.I. series, creatures of all shapes and sizes roam the earth, and coexist with humans through numerous lengthy pacts and treaties involving plenty of consequences in case of breakage including much death and destruction. Each race has an enormous amount of depth and lore that could satisfy even the most hardcore fantasy fan for years. Cook has masterfully crafted his own realm in which he, much like the Dead Man with his bugs, controls all, leaving out only those fit to be left up to the imagination. Garrett, a seasoned Cantard veteran and skull-breaker, lives with his “partner” the Dead Man, a dead Loghyr, an ancient psychic race, with whom he solves problems, for a fee of course. He has returned from his five years in the war to an exceptional market for private investigations and hired muscle. He often employs the help of what are the closest things to his friends; comrades and fellow head-bashers Morley Dotes the Dark Elf and Waldo “Saucerhead” Tharpe the self proclaimed full Human, though it is suspected he has some Giant in him. In Red Iron Nights by Glen Cook, Garrett and his companions are hired by the Captain of the lazy Town Watch to track down a serial killer running rampant in the streets. Of course, murders happen daily in Tun-Fair, but the bad boys are only called in when those off the Hill are threatened. In this case, only those from the hill are threatened.
In their endeavors to apprehend and quiet the serial killer, Garrett and his, for lack of a better word, “friends” bruise and batter baddies, get battered and bruised (though mostly Garrett), and encounter creatures of both beauty and something quite far from it. There is not much to say without giving away key elements of the story, but there is one more thing, Jackie. A few badder boys get thrown into the mix, with their own intentions and goals, creating quite the maze of people being in different knows. This book, as is the custom of the series, has a very intricate and twisting plot, filled with subplots and side quests of a sort, adding even more depth to the already complex and wonderful world of the Garrett P.I series. This book however, being fantasy, does not offer much in the way of obvious themes, though perhaps there is one underlying mantra that could take the place of the theme. “‘You really must make TNT your motto, Garrett...Today, Not Tomorrow. Take it from an expert. The only thing one should defer is one’s final appointment with Death’” (Cook 141). Large sections of the story depend upon Garrett’s unwillingness to work more than he must, to stay away from his bed and without rest for days simply to ensure everything truly is as it seems. Of course this could be contributed to Garrett’s charming personality, but nonetheless it is a driving force in the story.
With an exciting, multi layered plot, and many intermingling sub-plots, Red Iron Nights is a masterpiece of mystery, comparable even to The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, though I find that it is quite outshone by many others in its own series. Filled with dynamic, entertaining characters that have enough charm to stay lively, but are grave enough to keep a dark tone in the story, the book takes on the very underpopulated role of fiction that knows to not take itself very seriously. Adding to their already bountiful personalities, each character uses figures of speech quite liberally, both out loud and to themselves. Some phrases can, however, take a good amount of thought to truly comprehend the nature of the statement, but I find it to simply be icing on the cake. On the topic of dialogue and thoughts, oftentimes you will find yourself wondering what the darn tootin’ the characters are talking about, as the topics can get quite complex, seeing as how many characters do not know everything another does, and vice-versa. However Cook solves this with extreme effectiveness, in the form of Garrett’s own thoughts and feelings towards and about other characters and situations, such as “... I knew Block had turned catching old bug-breath into a big score. Suddenly there was a lot of stuff going on in the shadows” (Cook 119). The story itself seems to travel full speed ahead ‘till its last breath, keeping the reader in its clutches for as long as it possibly can.
This book, as with the rest of the series, handles very mature content and topics, yet is still... selectively abridged... enough that my mother doesn’t confiscate it as heresy. Cook handles mature content quite well in my opinion, often ensuing action and using figures of speech to save the reader from having to bleach their eyeballs, take a cold shower, or both. Of course, he still gets the message across with all of the emotion of the situation preserved. I would only recommend this series to those of a fairly mature nature, if not to protect innocence, then to avoid wasting the time of those who would not be able to fully understand and appreciate the genius of Glen Cook. Garrett’s world may be very different from our own, but that is the beauty of a fantasy story being able to experience life from another, very different perspective, and walk away a new and better you. Just don’t expect any of Garrett’s relationships to last.
I love Garrett! He always gets himself into such interesting cases, with an assortment of unusual characters, friends & foes.
Chandler meets Garrett!!!
Fun read
Love the story! I've enjoyed everything Glen Cook writes. The detail in every day lives and the whole who dunit he always pulls of in the stories are sweet. BUT..... couldn't find this book in electronic form anywhere. Would have been nice for my kindle
Another in a great series of fantasy detective noir books. There are sub arcs and arcs that are multi book. I appreciate the realistic point of view from a military and former military perspective.
Garrett keeps evolving. The series keeps growing.
The dialogue is constantly entertaining and the plots move right along.
Great fun.
