THE PERFECT POISON takes place in the late 1800s. Caleb Jones has started a private detective agency to investigate paranormal crimes. Caleb has a talent for putting pieces of a mystery together in other words, he is able to uncover conspiracies but fears that he will go insane the way others in his family with the same talent have. He is called to the house of Lucinda Bromley who is a paranormal botanist and is believed to have poisoned her fiance. Lucinda believes that a plant that was stolen from her has been used in a murder. The two end up working together to solve the mystery which also is connected to the overarching story of the cabal within Arcane.

Loved, loved, loved this story between Lucinda and Caleb. Caleb is more surly than the other heroes in the series. He is always working on his theories and he sees the world differently than others. The repartee between Caleb and Lucinda is witty and very sexy. The two have a deep interaction from the beginning. Neither of them are silly people. They both have dark spaces that end up resonating with one another. I think it is beautiful how these two people who don't expect to find love end up being the perfect couple.

I always love how strong the women in these books are. Lucinda is independent and is not threatened by Caleb. She meets him as an equal and he ends up with a deep respect for her.

This book is tied for my favorite of the series. My other favorite is IN TOO DEEP which is the story of Caleb and Lucinda's descendant Fallon Jones.

I have read all of Amanda Quick's Historical books and the first were so great. It is so hard to find a really good author lately. However, I have now read all 27 books and I have to say that after the first 5 books I could tell you exactly what each chapter was about. I almost gave up on the Arcane series because they are exactly the same books written over and over again, even some of the paragraphs were the same. She just came up with a different angle to put all her previous characters in. I almost did not read The Perfect Poison because I knew exactly how and what each chapter was going to say and how it would end. I had already bought the book so I forced myself to read it. It was a waste of my time. I will not be buying anymore Amanda Quick books. If I am going to pay for a book I would like for the author (who writes under way too many different names) to at least put a little effort into the book. I could just have read the first one and not bothered with the reading the rest and save myself money. The Arcane books are her WORST, repetitive, no imagination, and boring. I sincerely hope she does not think that just because she sells so many books that she is above trying to improve on each book. It only gives the reader an incentive to find a new author, which I have now done.

If you consider yourself an author, give this Arcane up and try to start over with your books or stop writing altogether. I am sure you can afford to stop boring your readers and taking their money.
Keeps me interested, many other books I start and don't finish. Characters, especially the women, have depth and independence. Write more of this genre.
If you have got this far in the series then keep going. This installment is not the best but still very enjoyable and worthwhile. It focuses on the establishment of Jones and Jones and finds a wife for Caleb. 3 stars
I was wondering when Caleb Jones and for that matter , Fallon Jones would meet the love of their lives . It seemed unfair to leave them hanging around so long . ( I am still waiting to know Fallon 's fate ) Caleb Jones has now met his wife and I must say , it was worth the wait . While some say the Arcane books all follow the same pattern , this one is better worked out , with more dept of character and some very entertaining verbal sparring . Agreed , there are some fairly strange coincidences at work here . A poison that works for ages and only on one type of talent ? I won't go on for I would spoil the read for others but it seems far fetched . But on the other hand , it works . More Arcane books please , on this level or even better ?
Readers of Amanda Quick no doubt know to follow the Arcane Series through the contemporary Jane Anne Krentz half of the series, with a few Jayne Castle contributions in the last half of the 12 book series. If this is news to you, get ready to enjoy them all!
