In a world of tepid, barely readable zombie novels, Tripps journey with Danny and her tribe, is brilliant. Mr. Tripp plays by his own rules, creating a vital, engrossing story with believable, excellent characters who the reader will love and hate. Added to this is his own unique breed of zombies. This is a great read. Highly recommended!Tags : Rise Again [Ben Tripp] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. A MYSTERIOUS CONTAGION. MASS HYSTERIA. Rise Again Ben Tripp 9781439165164 Books Reviews
Most of the conventions of a traditional Zombie novel remain intact in this novel; hordes of flesh eating zombies, the world as we know it left in ruins, humans forgoing humanity and fighting for survival, a small group holding out against impossible odds. In many ways it reminded me of Romero's DAWN of the DEAD sans the shopping mall.
The idea of a small, diverse corps of surviviors led by an almost tragically determined anti-hero are the centerpiece of this story. This heroic figure, Sheriff Danny (Danielle) Adelman was the thing that distinguished this novel for me. Danny
has not left her tour of Iraq behind her yet. She is physically disfigured, beneath her clothes, the result of an IED. Just as invisible is the disfiguration within her psyche. The zombie apocalypse just seems to unleash the pent up rage and pain this character feels. This character is carrying so much emotional baggage, that by novels end she is shambling across the landscape much like the zombies she is battling.
I highly recommend this quick, but highly engaging read to anyone who gets high on zombie novels. Lots of action, but lots of human moral and psychological substance to sink your teeth into -so to speak.
I'm building an extensive zombie/end of the world library, and this is one of my favorite books. It is simply fantastic. The character development, the plot, the accurate details, everything is right where it should be. The protagonist, an Iraq war vet turned small town sheriff, is very well worked out, with her flaws as blatant as her skills. She does seem to be a little too 'tough girl' for me at times, but that was the point the author was trying to make. There seem to be a majority of female characters in this story, which is different from the typical male-hero centric novels. The detail of weapons, vehicles, military tactics and humvees/tanks/APCs are excellent.
I love the twist of making different zombies.....learning zombies. At the very end, there are hints of talking, communicating zombies that can use weapons. As far as I know, this is a twist that has yet to be exploited. And you have to wonder....what if zombies DID learn? Anyone can run from a dumb, slow, shambling zombie. But what about ones that talk and shoot back at you?
Every character is well fleshed out, and I absolutely LOVED the inclusion of Wulf. The homeless vietnam vet, who reawakens his long range shooting and survival skills to become as much a hero as the protag (danny) herself. Furthermore, he is the ONLY person to immediately recognize zombies as what they are.....zombies. Every story you read involves people who have never heard of the word 'zombie.' Yet Wulf knows from the beginning, "you gotta destroy the brain", and even references 'night of the living dead' as his experience.
All I can say now is BUY AND READ THIS BOOK. It is zombie gold. You will love it and not be disappointed in the least. Once again, I hope there is a sequel, and continues the smart zombie line further.
After a couple years of viewing the terrific Ralph Nader ad, including scenes from "Night of the Living Dead," and reading about Ben Tripp's "Rise Again" on a Counterpunch.org article, I decided to give it a whirl, see what it is all about. As I began the book, a door of interest flew open & Ben Tripp's cast of characters began to intrigue -- Forest Peak's Sheriff, Iraq war vet, Danielle Adelman, runaway sister Kelley, and the ever surprising town drunk become hero, Wulf.
Zombies everywhere, and as Ben Tripp masterfully asserts "panic spreads as fast as sound." Sheriff Danny Adelman relies upon well-honed survival skills, building searches/evacuations, learned as a soldier serving in Iraq, and forms one of the most interesting groups of misfits ever to confront an apocalypse filled with zombies, ever more agile, growing smarter, lethal to a point where a reader could believe in them, desire to hide behind a "hurricane fence."
Ben Tripp intertwines Danny's zombie battles with flahbacks to Iraq. Early in the book, one confronts one among Danny's powerful war memories outside a burning mud-brick-house, woman in black appears, maybe a hardcore Shia Islamist "looked like the Grim Reaper." As Danny moves with street smarts & bravery throughout zombie infected California, such scenes of horror recur -- and doubtless "the horror, the horror" it is.
In "Rise Again," Tripp is most clever and politically astute. One antagonist for Danny Adelman and her band of brothers & sisters is the notorious mercenary group, Hawkstone, lead by Murdo who shared no patriotic options but to save his own skin. Nothing but sheer inattention/sleep would fail to remind a reader of Blackwater contractors in Iraq.
This book had my eyes & mind hoarse with excitement. My only complaint & reason for only four-stars is that Ben Tripp laid passionate beatings upon Sheriff Danny that only Mel Gibson's Christ could have withstood. An amazing writer, staggering the reader with profound thought every couple pages, I'll say that nothing but sheer poverty and a stampede of zombies shall keep me away from Tripp's next work.
